Two Panther Doubles Teams Record Wins
Singles Main Draw | Singles Qualifying Draws | Doubles
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team concluded its first day of action Friday at the 2017 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships on the campus of Virginia Tech.
Two Pitt doubles teams notched wins on the day to stay alive in the Championships, while two Panthers were unable to make it out of the qualifying singles bracket.
"In doubles, we took leads and we ran with them which was very positive," said head coach Alex Santos. "In singles, with the type of talent we have and the tennis we are playing, we could have at least one more player in the main singles draw. Gabriela [Rezende] and Luisa [Varon] weren't ambitious and resilient enough in their matches which is the difference maker."
The morning began with the qualifying singles draws in which juniors Gabriela Rezende and Luisa Varon each faced Virginia Tech opponents.
Rezende took the first set from VT's Luisa Uscocovich, 6-3, but fell 6-4, 6-4, in the final two.
Varon took down her first match-up of the day. She defeated Virginia Tech's Nancy Ghanem, 6-4, 6-1, before falling to JMU's Anna Makarova, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
In doubles, the Pitt tandem of Varon and freshman Claudia Bartolome posted a dominant 8-2 win over their Penn State opponent. The duo will face Virginia Tech's Caroline Daxhelet and Natalie Novotna Saturday at 9 a.m.
The doubles team of senior Callie Frey and freshman Camila Moreno recorded an 8-5 win over their William & Mary opponent. Frey and Moreno will take on Maryland's Ekaterina Tour and Eva Alexandrova Saturday at 10 a.m.
Saturday will feature round of 32 and 16 doubles beginning at 9 a.m. Main draw singles will get underway not before 11:30 a.m. with the round of 64.
Pitt has three Panthers in the singles main draw including Bartolome, Frey and Moreno.
