Pitt Concludes Action at Vartabedian Invite

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team had another impressive showing Saturday afternoon as it concluded action in the Vartabedian Invite, taking down Morgan State.
The Panthers earned six total victories over the Bears, including back-to-back doubles wins.
Redshirt senior Amber Washington and junior Callie Frey got things going again at No. 1 doubles, downing Kayla Price and Katia Jordan, 6-1, while sophomore Gabriela Rezende and freshman Jovana Knezevic also earned a 6-1 win over Danielle Thompson and Chloe Kabamba.
Washington carried her winning momentum to singles as she took down Kabamba in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.
Playing No. 2 singles, senior Audrey Ann Blakely claimed the first set 7-5 over Jordan, but fell in the second 2-6. However, Blakely bounced back in the third set, 6-4, to claim the victory.
At No. 3 singles, Rezende blanked Thompson in the first set, 6-0, and outlasted her opponent 6-3 in the second. Frey picked up the sixth win for the Panthers on the day after she defeated Yvonne Peters-Washington in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Washington was named the singles champion, while her and her doubles partner, Frey, were named tournament doubles champions.
Pitt resumes action Saturday, Jan. 21 as it hosts West Virginia at 10 a.m. at the Alpha Tennis & Fitness Center.
