PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team (7-4, 1-4 ACC) fell to No. 8 Duke (11-2, 4-1 ACC) Friday afternoon at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The Panthers two points on the day both came from singles.
"I'm very proud of both Amber [Washington] and Audrey Ann [Blakely]," head coach Alex Santos said. "We had some really good performances on other courts as well."
The Blue Devils gained an early advantage over the Panthers after claiming the doubles point. Pitt's tandem of junior Audrey Ann Blakely and freshman Gabriela Rezende turned in the first doubles win of the day, before the Panther duo of redshirt junior Amber Washington and junior Lolade Ogungbesan dropped a 6-3 decision to Duke's Kaitlyn McCarthy and Samantha Harris. With the doubles point on the line, sophomore Callie Frey and freshman Carina Ma fell to Duke's Ellyse Hamlin and Jessica Ho, 6-3.
In singles action, Washington dominated her opponent, defeating redshirt junior Christina Makarova in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Washington's win tied the dual 1-1. However, the Blue Devils would go on to claim the following four singles matches to lock up the dual win.
No. 123 Blakely was the last Panther to record a singles victory as she defeated No. 32 McCarthy at No. 2 singles. Blakely dropped the first set 3-6, but stormed back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-2.
Ogungbesan suffered straight set losses to No. 67 Scholl, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1. Frey and Ma also dropped straight set decisions. Ma fell to sophomore Samantha Harris 7-6 and 6-1, while Frey dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to No. 106 Hamlin.
Rezende lost a hard fought match to Ho in extra sets. The Pitt freshman won the first set 6-4, but dropped the next two, 6-0, 6-3.
Pitt will continue play Sunday, March 20 against No. 12 Miami (8-4, 3-2 ACC). The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
