PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh tennis team (7-5, 1-5 ACC) fell to No. 12 Miami (9-5, 4-2 ACC) Sunday afternoon at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The Panthers lone point of the day came from redshirt junior Amber Washington in singles.
"Amber [Washington] has a chip on her shoulder. She wants to enjoy every single moment on the court," head coach Alex Santos said. "She has all of the right ingredients to be successful."
Miami gained an early advantage in the match after claiming the doubles point, however the Panthers did not go down easily. Playing number one doubles, 10th-ranked Stephanie Wagner and Wendy Zhang turned in the first win over Pitt's Audrey Ann Blakely and Gabriela Rezende, 6-2. The tandem of Callie Frey and Carina Ma, playing at the number two position, then defeated No. 55 Sinead Lohan and Clara Tanielian, 6-4, to split the doubles matches.
With the doubles point on the line, Washington and Natsumi Okamoto battled with Clementina Riobueno and Silvia Fuentes, but dropped the match 7-6 after an 8-6 tiebreaker loss.
In singles, Okamoto fell to Miami freshman Ana Madcur in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. While Rezende dropped her match as well, 6-0, 6-1. As a result, the Hurricanes took a 3-0 advantage in the dual.
Washington then recorded the lone win for the Panthers by defeating Miami's Clementina Riobueno in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. The win would not be enough as the Hurricanes would claim the remaining matches.
After dropping the first set, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, Ma took an early lead by winning the first game of the second set against seventh-ranked Lohan. Ma would win two more games after that, but it wasn't enough, as she fell to Lohan 6-3 in the second set.
Frey also went down in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 singles to No. 103 Wendy Zhang.
Stepping in at No. 1 singles, No. 123 Blakely dropped the first set, 6-1, and remained close with sixth-ranked Stephanie Wagner the rest of the way. Late in the second set, Blakey bounced back to win three straight games to tie the score at four however Blakely would fall 6-4 in the set.
"We have come a long way, so we should be happy about that," Santos said, "But at the same time we should be hungry for more."
