No. 75 Pitt Tennis Defeats Morgan State, Duquesne

PITTSBURGH - The 75th-ranked Pitt tennis team improved to 7-3 overall on Friday, March 11 at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The Panthers defeated Morgan State, 7-0, followed by taking down local-foe Duquesne, 5-2.
"I was very happy with our performance against Morgan State," head coach Alex Santos said. "We talked about being efficient and intense and I think we did that in both doubles and singles. I think we could've done better in doubles against Duquesne, but I was I very happy with everyone's toughness and competitiveness in singles. It's not easy to lose the doubles point and come back to as strong as we did.
MORGAN STATE, 7-0
The Panthers had an early advantage in doubles as the Bears forfeited their third doubles match. The tandem of redshirt junior Amber Washington and Ogungbesan dominated at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, securing the doubles point for Pitt. The match was only tied once, 1-1, and they never looked back. The doubles win marked Ogungbesan's 100th career win as a Panther. She becomes the 17th Pitt tennis player to eclipse 100 wins.
In singles action, Morgan State forfeited No. 6 singles giving the Panthers a 2-0 edge early on.
Freshman Gabriela Rezende turned in the first singles win of the day at No. 4 singles after taking down Morgan State's Cierra Plummer, 6-0, 6-3.
Soon after, Washington extended Pitt's lead to 4-0 after dominating Chelsi Russell at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Carina Ma never trailed in her match at No. 2 singles, taking down Daniella Thompson, 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 3 singles, sophomore Callie Frey won a back-and-forth battle with Chloe Kabamba. Frey led early on in the first set, until Kabamba took a 4-3 lead. However, Frey bounced back to win three straight games en route to a 6-4 win. The Pittsburgh native carried her momentum to the second set, winning that 6-2.
Ogungbesan was the final Panther to finish this afternoon. The London, England, native outlasted Kayla Price at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, good for her 101th career win at Pitt.
DUQUESNE, 5-2
The Dukes jumped to an early 1-0 lead over the Panthers after securing the doubles point. The Pitt doubles team of Frey/Ma at No. 3 turned in the first win of doubles play, taking down Duquesne's Maddy Adams and Ally Miller, 6-1.
At No. 1, Washington/Ogungbesan fell in a hard-fought 6-4 decision to Kylie Isaacs and Julianne Herman who improve to 12-0 overall this season.
The tandem of Blakely/Rezende dropped a 6-3 decision to Megan Wasson and Sarah Shashura at No. 2, putting the doubles point in Duquesne's favor.
The Panthers bounced back in singles, winning three straight singles matches to take a 3-1 lead in the dual.
Blakely finished first at No. 2 singles, defeating Julianne Herman 6-2, 6-2.
Washington quickly followed at No. 6, turning in a 6-3, 6-4, win over Ally Miller.
At No. 3 singles, Ma carried her momentum from the morning into her match, taking down Duquesne's Maddy Adam 6-2, 6-1.
Ogungbesan was the lone Panther to drop a singles match against the Dukes. She fell to Kylie Isaacs at No. 1, 6-2, 7-6(3).
Frey secured the Pitt victory at No. 4 after a hard-fought, 6-3, 6-2, win over Alexa Miller.
Rezende was the last Panther to record a victory in the dual at No. 5. The freshman defeated Megan Wasson, 6-2, 7-6(4), 10-8.
The Panthers conclude nonconference play 6-0 and resume ACC action with Duke on March 18 at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
