PITTSBURGH - Pitt tennis head coach Alex Santos announced the spring schedule for the 2017 season Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers are set to host 12 home duals at their home site, Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
"We are very excited to announce our spring schedule," Santos said. "The goal is to keep growing as a team and by playing such a challenging schedule, there is no doubt that the opportunity will be in front of us. We feel that we have had a strong fall and that we have grown a lot in terms of maturity and the ability to play the important points well."
The Panthers will travel to face eight opponents over the course of the season. Pitt will face off against five teams from last season's ITA top-25 rankings.
To open the season, the Panthers will host the Vartabedian Invite (Jan. 13-15) before hosting West Virginia (Jan. 21), ACC foe Notre Dame (Jan. 29) and Duquesne (Feb. 4).
Pitt will then hit the road for three straight duals, taking on Penn State (Feb. 12) and conference opponents Louisville (Feb. 25) and Syracuse (March 3). Last year, the Panthers defeated both Penn State and Louisville, marking historical wins for the program as Pitt picked up its first win over a ranked opponent in the Nittany Lions and first ACC win over the Cardinals.
The Panthers will return to Pittsburgh for a pair of duals featuring their final non-conference opponent, Dayton (March 11), and Boston College (March 17). Pitt will conclude the month of March with Clemson (March 19) on the road, before hosting Georgia Tech (March 24) and Florida State (March 26).
A trip to North Carolina will kick off April, as the Panthers take on Duke (April 1) and NC State (April 2) before returning to Pittsburgh to host three straight duals against Wake Forest (April 7), Virginia Tech (April 9) and Virginia (April 14).
Pitt will conclude the regular season on the road against top competition, first at Miami (April 16) and will cap it off with a trip to last year's ACC Champion in North Carolina (April 22).
The 2017 ACC Championships will be held April 26-29 at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga., while the NCAA Championships will get underway May 18-29 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Pitt returns seven of eight players from a year ago and have added Limassol, Cyprus, product Jovana Knezevic. The veteran group of Panthers showed great improvements during the fall season, participating in four invitationals.
