SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team (2-4, 0-0 ACC) fell today, 10-4, to the Buccaneers of East Tennessee State (3-1, 0-0 SoCon) at Cleveland S. Harley Baseball Park in the finale of a three-game southern road swing.
“We came out smoking in that first inning and got three hits, but unfortunately only scored one run swinging the bats well,” said head coach Joe Jordano. “It’s frustrating, but again, we’re a team that has to do everything right [to win]. We’re going to stick to the process, keep working hard every day, and hopefully it’ll produce some better results.”
Just five of the 10 runs ETSU scored were earned, though the Panthers committed only two errors on the day.
Aaron Schnurbusch (0-2, 6.14) received the loss for the Panthers after allowing four runs, two earned, and seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. ETSU’s Lee Haeberle (2-0, 1.50) earned the win after surrendering just one run, four hits, and a walk in 6.0 IP.
Hobie Harris entered in relief of Schnurbusch in the fourth and would go on to pitch 3.1 innings of his own. He ultimately gave up five runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out three.
Nick Parnell, Ryan Campbell, and Isaac Mattson also made appearances late, combining to allowing two runs, one earned, over 2.0 innings. Mattson struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Pitt’s bats gave it the early lead for the third consecutive game. Jacob Wright and Nick Yarnall chipped in back-to-back singles in the Panther half of the first. Wright, who has recorded a hit in every game so far this season from the leadoff spot, then scored when Boo Vazquez drove a 3-2 pitch back up the middle.
Wright would get his second hit of the day to lead off the third inning, but the Panthers were unable to mount many scoring opportunities against Haeberle after the opening stanza.
Jamin McCann relieved Haeberle to start the seventh, and Pitt responded with consecutive hits from Charles LeBlanc and Eric Hess. Frank Maldonado then stung a hard grounder to third, resulting in an inning-ending double play.
The Panthers would get to McCann in the bottom of the eighth, however, scoring two runs on three hits, including a triple from Jordan Frabasilio and the second RBI single of the day for Vazquez – his fourth driven in this season.
Their efforts continued in the bottom of the ninth, when Leblanc opened the last half-inning by reaching on an error followed by a base knock from Eric Hess. Leblanc eventually scampered home on a wild pitch.
The Panthers will return to action when they travel to Richmond, Va., to take on VCU in a three-game nonconference series next weekend.
