SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team (1-3, 0-0 ACC) fell on the road at Russell C. King Field to Wofford (5-0, 0-0 SoCon) today, 5-3, following a three-run eighth inning for the Terriers that gave them the lead late in the game.
“We stubbed our toe a little bit in that ballgame against a very good team,” said head coach Joe Jordano. “T.J. pitched very well today. We also swung the bats really well; we had a lot of hard outs. It’s not going our way right now, but we’ve just got to come back tomorrow, keep working hard, and good things will come of it.”
The result spoiled another strong outing from sophomore starting pitcher T.J. Zeuch (1-1, 2.03 ERA). The big right-hander scattered five hits over 7.1 innings, struck out eight, and retired 10 straight from the first through fourth frames. He surrendered four runs overall, just two of which were earned, but still took the tough-luck loss.
After Zeuch struck out four of the first six batters he faced over the first two innings, the Panthers took the lead in the third on an RBI fielder’s choice from Jacob Wright. His groundball scored Eric Hess, who had walked for the seventh time already this season, stolen second, and moved to third on a single from Charles LeBlanc.
Wofford kept pace with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, one of two for them on the day.
After Eric Hess tallied his second run of the game in the fourth on a sac fly from Nick Yarnall, second baseman Jordan Frabasilio delivered a blast of his own in the top of the sixth for his team-leading second home run of the year.
Pitt entered the fateful eighth inning with a slim 3-2 lead after Wofford’s Mack Nathanson added the Terriers’ other solo shot in the seventh.
Zeuch, still working well into the eighth, gave up a leadoff single but retired the next man on a ground-out. With one down, the right-hander bounced a pitch in for a strikeout, but the Panthers committed an error on the throw to first. From there, an intentional pass and three subsequent walks gave Wofford their final 5-3 lead.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they visit USC Upstate. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
