PITTSBURGH--Louisville's Inger Katrine Bjerke scored on a rebound goal off a missed penalty kick play to give the Cardinals a 1-0 overtime victory over the Pitt women's soccer team Thursday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The loss drops Pitt to 6-10-0 overall and 2-6-0 in the ACC. Louisville improves to 7-7-2 overall and 3-3-2 in ACC play.
In the game's third minute of overtime and 93rd overall minute, Louisville was awarded a penalty kick after a called foul in the penalty box. Chatham Deprospo's penalty shot was saved by Pitt goalkeeper Taylor Francis. The ball bounced directly back to Deprospo, who sent another shot at Francis. A diving Francis deflected it back into the field of play and toward a charging Bjerke, who deposited a one-touch shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
"It's tough to lose a game in that situation," Pitt head coach Greg Miller said. "We've won games like that in the past. At first glance, I thought it was a penalty. Taylor Francis makes two unbelievable saves on the penalty and we don't a good job of tracking players running in and finishing. You can't assume that Taylor's going to scoop the ball up or that the ball is going to go in. Credit Louisville, they are a `never say die' team. They proved that in the end. Give them half a chance and they're going to try to capitalize and that's exactly what happened. It's very heartbreaking to lose a game like that in that situation when I thought we had some opportunities."
It was Francis' second penalty kick stop in two games as she also saved a first half penalty shot in the first half against No. 2 Florida State. Francis finished with eight saves in the game.
The two teams played 90 minutes of scoreless, evenly played soccer. Though Pitt was outshot 17-6, the Panthers had several opportunities to capitalize. Freshmen Taylor Pryce and Hanna Hannesdottir each registered one shot on goal apiece.
Louisville was led by Deprospo, who finished with four shots on goal and Kari Weinland, who finished with three shots. The Cardinals had four corner kicks to Pitt's two. Louisville goalkeeper Paige Brown registered two saves.
The match was televised nationally on ESPN3.
Two games remain on the Pitt's schedule: at home vs. Clemson on Sunday, Oct. 26 (1 p.m.) and at Virginia (Nov. 1). Sunday marks Senior Day and the final home match for seniors Alex Charlebois, Riliegh McHugh and Jackie Poucel.
