NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In a three day tournament which saw the Panthers play Yale, Brown and Dartmouth out of the Ivy League, the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team concluded their third tournament of the fall this weekend.
The Panthers were defeated by all three teams, but saw some positive results, especially from freshman Callie Frey who was 2-1 in both singles and doubles.
Frey, along with Amber Washington picked up singles wins in the opening match of the tournament against Yale, while she was the lone Pitt player to tally a singles win against Brown on Saturday. Frey and her doubles teammate Molly Wickman also registered a doubles win against Brown, winning 8-7 over Niki Uberoi and Maddie Stearns.
In today’s finale against Dartmouth, Lolade Ogungbesan tallied her first singles victory of the weekend by rallying to win 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 over Taylor Ng on court one. Amanda Wickman and Katherine Castro also won singles matches, but they came against Rencheli of Quinnipiac and Hsu of Brown. Wickman won 5-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Castro won 6-3, 6-4.
“I was very excited with the chemistry, energy, and positivity that I saw between Amber and Lolade in doubles,” head coach Alex Santos said. “Unfortunately we came up a little short, but great things lie ahead of both of them if they keep the same attitude. In singles Lolade beat a tremendous player in an incredible battle that could have gone either way. This time she came out on top and she will keep taking her tennis to higher levels by competing at her best.”
