
Molly Wickman, Pitt Doubles Advance at ITA Regionals

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Molly Wickman made her way through the qualifying bracket of the ITA Atlantic Regional and earned a spot in the 64-player main draw on Friday at the Burrows-Burlson Tennis Center hosted by Virginia Tech.
Pitt also advanced both its doubles teams on the opening day of action and now has all three of its doubles tandems remaining.
Wickman opened the day with a resounding 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sophie Bernard of Georgetown, and then punched her ticket to the main draw with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Taylor Newman of Radford.
Also in singles, Katherine Castro and Amber Washington won their opening round match, but fell short in the second round and missed the main draw by one match. Castro beat Hanna Victorsson of UMBC (6-4, 6-3) before suffering a 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Emily Groeneveld of Liberty.
Washington registered a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Olivia Gaudreault of Maryland, but then was topped by Taylor Shukow of Penn State.
In doubles, Amanda Wickman and Amber Washington needed to tie-break to defeat Berezhnaya/Burgiere of VCU 8-7 (5). They will take on Mercer/Morton of Virginia tomorrow morning.
Also advancing was Callie Frey and Molly Wickman who topped Marx/de Chatellus of Georgetown, 8-4. They will face Mita/Stoica of Virginia Tech who had a bye in the first round.
Still to compete are Lolade Ogungbesan and Audrey Ann Blakely who were selected to the main draw of singles and, as a duo, had a bye in doubles. Blakely is the eighth overall seed in singles and the duo is also seeded eighth overall in doubles.
