Borza Adds to Her Singles Win Streak

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Heavy rain forces the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team to play over eight hours, where it suffered a 5-4 loss to No. 22 Nova Southeastern at the NSU Tennis Complex on Sunday.
The match began with Pitt (3-5) taking a 2-1 lead after earning a pair of doubles wins. The No. 2 freshmen duo of Jocelyn Lu and Kimmy Borza improved to 5-5 with a hard-fought 8-6 victory.
Next, senior Elizabeth Adams and sophomore Gabrielle Catanzariti had a little bit more of a cushion and improved to 5-4 with an 8-5 victory in the No. 1 spot. With that win, Adams has 132 career wins and is now three shy of tying Carlie Smith (2004-08) for second on the all-time wins list.
Unfortunately for the Panthers though, the Sharks (5-1) would win the first three singles matches that concluded. Pitt trailed 3-2 following sophomore Karma Parbhu‘s 6-2, 6-4 loss in No. 5 singles.
In the next match to finish, Lu would tie the team score at 3-3 with a two-set victory in No. 3 singles. Her match was the last to finish before the extended rain delay.
Later, Borza knotted the overall score at 4-4, when she handed Paige Lindsley her first singles loss of the season after coming back in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win. Borza has won her last four singles matches and holds the longest current streak.
With just one match remaining, the final point of the contest was decided in a super tiebreaker, where Adams slipped in a see-saw battle in the No. 1 spot. Adams dropped the first set, but battled back with 7-5 victory to force the tiebreaker. Then in the third set, Adams was outlasted by her opponent 7-6.
The Panthers remain in Florida to finish out their Spring Break trip, as they face St. Thomas at 2 p.m. on Monday.
