MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.--The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory over St. Thomas, this afternoon. The Panthers improved to 4-5 on the year, while Bobcats slipped to 6-5.
Pitt opened the match sweeping the doubles. Paired in No. 3 doubles, junior Minh Evans and freshman Taylor Washington earned a win in their first time playing together. The squad surrendered just three games in the 8-3 victory.
In another 8-3 decision, the duo of senior Elizabeth Adams and Gabi Catanzariti recorded their sixth win of the season.
Playing in the No. 2 spot, freshmen Jocelyn Lu and Kimmy Borza led 6-1 when their opponents retired due to an injury.
Lu would then earn the first singles win of the match as a result of the same injury, while Adams retired her singles contest during a close first set. Lu has a team-best 13 singles wins on the year.
The four matches that continued ended as two-set victories for Pitt. Freshman Brittney Russell was dominate in No. 6 singles, as she shutout her opponent in the first set and lost just one game in the second set.
In a similar fashion, sophomore Karma Parbhu won six straight games in her first set, before giving up two games in the second set.
In No. 2 singles, Catanzariti dropped just one game in each of her sets for a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Later, Borza swept the first set and dropped four games in the second set en route to her fifth consecutive victory.
The Panthers return to action at home on Saturday, March 12 with a 10 a.m. contest against Big East foe Cincinnati at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club.
