Pitt Baseball Drops 9-2 Contest to Indiana

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt baseball team finished the Russ Matt Invitation with a 3-2 record after falling to Indiana, 9-2 in the finale Monday in Winter Haven, Fla.
Indiana improved to 9-5 on the season while the Panthers dropped to 8-4 overall.
Seniors Travis Whitmore and Zach Duggan highlighted the Panthers performances on the day.
Whitmore went 3-for-4 at the plate including a double in the second inning. Duggan collected hits in all three at bats.
Freshman Ethan Mildren pitched 7.1 innings, striking out five without walking a batter.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the top of the eighth, the Hoosiers opened up a five run inning before adding two more runs in the ninth to win the game, 9-2.
After Indiana jumped out to a 2-0 lead, junior Anthony Defabio and sophomore Ronald Sucre hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to right field to even the contest at 2-2.
The Panthers were unable to capitalize after the second inning and Indiana starter Brian Korte pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Despite dropping the final two games of the Invitational, the Panthers outscored their opponents, 36-19 in the five games.
Following the game, Whitmore was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for his contributions in which the Panthers went 5-1 on the week.
Pitt returns home to host Kent State on Wednesday, March 16. The game will be the first ever to be played on the Charles L. Cost Field inside the brand new Petersen Sports Complex. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
