Russell Earns Her Fourth Singles Victory of the Year

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.--Freshman Brittney Russell won her second consecutive singles match, however, Pitt's women's tennis team fell 6-1 at Penn State on Wednesday evening. The Panthers slipped to 1-1 on the year, while the Nittany Lions improved to 1-1.
With her victory, Russell improved to 4-1 in singles action this year. Playing in No. 6 singles, she had to come from behind after dropping her first set 1-6. Next, in the second set she made a stand, earning a 6-3 win. Russell would then outlast PSU's Fernanda Perrotta in an 11-9 tiebreaker.
Two courts over, classmate Kimmy Borza looked as if she was going to comeback in her second set and force a tiebreaker as well. However, Penn State's Carmen Sandor held on for the 7-5 victory after going 6-4 in the first set.
Pitt lost the doubles point early, falling in all three matches. The No. 1 pairing of senior Elizabeth Adams and sophomore Gabrielle Cantanzariti faced the No. 68-ranked duo of Petra Januskova and Perrotta. Adams and Cantanzariti were held at three games, as they earned their second loss in their last four matches together.
The Panthers open Big East play with a neutral site contest against St. John's in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 10:30 a.m.
