Lu Upsets Top Seed In Singles Action

WEST POINT, N.Y.—Freshman Jocelyn Lu upsets the top seed in her bracket, as Pitt’s women’s tennis team completed action at the Women's Eastern Collegiate Invitational, held on Army’s campus.
Earning a quarterfinal victory over the top seed in C singles, Lu moved on to the semifinals with scores of 4-6, 6-4 and 10-7. Lu later advanced to play the No. 3 seed Julie LaBarthe and fell 6-2, 6-1.
However, she claimed a third-place finish in the 32-participant bracket with a win over West Virginia’s Veronica Cardenas, 8-4, on the final day of competition.
In D singles, senior Adela Aprodu slipped in two sets during her quarterfinal match against the Mountaineer’s Melis Tanik (6-2, 6-0).
In other singles action, sophomore Gabrielle Catanzariti played in the Honor singles bracket on Saturday, and dropped an 8-1 decision to Rhode Island’s Pam Emery. Meanwhile, senior Elizabeth Adams retired while trailing 6-2 to her opponent in an A singles quarterfinals match.
In the doubles brackets, sophomore Minh Evans and freshman Brittney Russell dropped their quarterfinal match to St. John’s top-seeded duo in As & Bs doubles, 8-3. They later moved to the Lichtenberg Doubles bracket, where they fell 8-4 to a FDU pair, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.
Also playing in the Lichtenberg Doubles, freshman Kimmy Borza and sophomore Karma Parbhu advanced to the semifinals in the bottom half of the bracket. Borza and Parbhu sealed an 8-1 win over FDU’s Kristina Martinez and Emily Napier in the round of 16.
Next, the Panthers combined for an 8-3 victory over Liz Piscitelli and Jillian Sloan of Lehigh. However, Borza and Parbhu’s win streak came to an end in the semifinals when a pair from Sacred Heart defeated them 8-5.
Both Borza and Parbhu went on to play in the X-hibition one-on-one Gold Doubles division later in the day. Borza lost to Bowdoin’s Emma Lewis, who was a part of the winning As & Bs doubles division team, 4-0. Parbhu was defeated in a close affair by SJU’s Ksenia Mikhaylova, 4-2.
In the X-hibition one-on-one Black Doubles division, Russell took on NJIT’s Hannelore MacDonald but fell 4-0.
Up next, the Panthers will travel to Norfolk, Va. to play in the Sergio Tacchini Invitational, hosted by Old Dominion on Friday, Oct. 8.
