Women's Tennis Advances To Quarterfinals on Day 1

WEST POINT, N.Y.—As the No. 6 seed in A singles, senior Elizabeth Adams of the women’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals on the first day of action in the Women's Eastern Collegiate Invitational, held on Army’s campus. Four other Panthers join Adams in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Adams had to play from behind in her first-round match, after falling 4-6 in the first set. She would cruise to a victory in the second set, 6-2, and then outlast her Long Island opponent, 10-1, in the tie breaker.
Adams played another hard-fought match against Fordam’s Angie Dabu in the round of 16. She dropped her opening set again, 1-6, but pickup of the second at 6-3. In the tiebreaker she sealed the victory with a 10-5 score. Adams faces No. 2 seed Annie Houghton of Army at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Freshman Jocelyn Lu will face top seeded Candyce Boney of Massachucetts in C singles, following two victories on Friday. First, she won 6-4 and 6-3 over Hoftsra’s Christie Gattelaro. Next, she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Steph Smyers of Bryant.
Senior Adela Aprodu will also play in the quarterfinals. In her first round match of D singled, she swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Then in the round of 16, she posted a 7-6 (1) first set win over No. 3 seed Sarah Viebrock of Quinnipiac. Aprodu then sealed the victory with a 6-0 second set.
In other singles action, sophomore Gabrielle Catanzariti earned a first-round victory over Gabi Kaldan of Sacred Heart. Catanzariti outlasted Kaldan in the first set 7-5. She then went 6-4 in the second game for the sweep. In quarterfinals, however, Catanzariti fell 2-6, 5-7 to FDU’s Julia Prantl.
In doubles action, sophomore Minh Evans and freshman Brittney Russell will also square off against a No. 1 seed on Saturday, as they advanced to the quarterfinals of B doubles. After earning a bye in the opening round, the pair tallied an 8-3 victory over Providence’s Courtney Fuller and Cristina Troy.
In an intense first-round matchup, Pitt’s No. 1 doubles team of freshman Kimmy Borza and sophomore Karma Parbhu defeated West Virginia’s Anna Rodianova and Catie Wickline, 9-8 (4). They would later slip in an 8-4 loss to FDU’s Irina Dementyeva and Dzana Ferhatbegaovic.
Tournament action resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25.
