CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to James Madison in its third game of the Tar Heel Invitational, held at Anderson Stadium. The Panthers slipped to 2-6 on the year, while JMU improved to 5-3.
Pitt had an opportunity to score early in the game. In her first at-bat of the contest, freshman Krista Rodgers singled to right field as the lead-off in the third inning. She was then moved to second with a bunt from sophomore Kristen Cheesebrew. Next, a wild pitch allowed her to reach third. However, she was left stranded when teammates hit a fly ball to center field and another fouled out.
Later in the fifth, Rodgers and Cheesebrew went back-to-back with one-out singles. After Cheesebrew stole second, both looked to score in the inning, but were held still with two groundballs.
Sophomore Amanda Heitmeier was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, while Cheesebrew and Rodgers went 2-for-3.
Junior Alyssa O'Connell (2-2) took the loss for Pitt. She allowed three runs off six hits, while striking out six batters. James Madison used a double and two homers to score its three runs in the contest.
Next, the Panthers face Fairfield in their final contest of the Tar Heel Invitational.
