MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—Sophomore Elizabeth Adams eclipsed the single-season doubles records, as the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team earned its fifth shutout of the season with a 7-0 victory over Connecticut on Saturday. The Panthers improved their overall record to 11-5 and are 6-1 in the Big East, while the Huskies slipped to 7-8 on the year.
“This win was probably the most competitive and strongest match we played this season,” Head Coach George Dieffenbach said. “Everyone was fired up and we beat a very good team.”
In its fifth sweep of the season and second in conference action, Pitt continues to add to its best-ever league record, 6-1, with just two Big East matches left this season.
Winning the doubles’ point, the No. 1 pair of Adams and senior Kristy Borza improved to 21-3 on the year. With the victory, Adams won her 22nd doubles’ match of the season, setting the single-season record previously held by three individuals. It was originally set in 1997-98 by Fran Davis (21-7) and has since then been tied by Borza in 2008-09 (21-3), 2006-07 (21-10) and 2005-06 (21-12) and senior Christie D’Achille in 2006-07 (21-12).
Borza and Adams currently boast a .875 win percentage, which is another record-setting mark for a pair at Pitt. The duo would later win their singles matches in two quick sets.
Playing with renewed energy, D’Achille, freshman Minh Evans and junior Shannon Benic all came back from first set loses to earn their singles’ victories. Sophomore Adela Aprodu, on the other hand, held off a charge from her opponent in No. 5 singles to win in a super tiebreaker.
