Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season In Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Pitt's no. 1 doubles duo of senior Kristy Borza and sophomore Elizabeth Adams led the Panthers' women's tennis team, as they advanced to the finals in the top flight of the University of Maryland Invitational.
In the first weekend of the 2008-09 fall season, Borza (Beaver, Pa./ Beaver Area) and Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson) recorded a 3-0 record before falling to a pair from host Maryland, 8-3, in the finals of Flight A Doubles.
After earning a bye in the first round, Borza and Adams gave up just three points against UNC Wilmington (8-3) and handed 8-6 defeats to Dartmuth and another Maryland team to garner a place in the championship match.
The team of senior Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior Sabrina Visram (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) ended their weekend with wins over Georgetown (8-3) and James Madison (8-3). Earlier in the first round, D'Achille and Visram slipped 8-4 to UNC Wilmington to drop into the consolation bracket.
In singles competition, Adams won three of her four rounds in Flight A Singles play. She defeated Georgetown's Caroline Kuehn (6-1, 6-3), UNC Wilmington's Lauren Isenhour (6-3, 3-6, 10-7) and George Washington's Nadia Demidenko (2-6, 7-6 (2), 12-10).
Sophomore Adela Aprodu (Hamilton, Ont.) made it to the semifinals in Flight B, winning her first three matches in the round. In her first contest of the weekend, she came back from a 2-6 loss to Tyner of Georgetown to force a tiebreaker with a 6-2 victory in the second set. Aprodu then advanced with a 10-2 win in the breaker.
Aprodu then won both sets in the second round with a score of 6-2, before playing another tiebreaker against the Terps' Husckke. In the semis, she fell 1-6, 1-6 to Husckke's teammate Miller.
The Panthers travel to West Point, N.Y., this weekend for the Women's Tennis Eastern Championships starting Friday, Sept. 26.
