PITTSBURGH--Senior Carlie Smith tied the career singles wins record, this afternoon, as the University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team fell 5-2 in its match against Army at the Oxford Athletic Club North. The Panthers slip to 1-1 on the season.
Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) tied the school record for most career singles win, when she posted Pitt's first point in the match. Playing at No. 5 doubles, Smith earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Army's Diana Alquero. The win also improved her overall career record to 114-76, which ranks fifth on the all-time wins list.
Freshman Elizabeth Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson) garnered the second point for the Panthers with a come-from-behind win in No. 3 singles. Adams battled back in every set to earn the win, as she opened the first set down 3-0. She would respond and take a 4-3 lead in that set before falling 6-7.
In the second set, Adams trailed early once again. However, she gained momentum after a few shots grazed the corners in her favor. Adams then earned the win 7-6 in a tie breaker. Next, in the ultimate tiebreaker, she and Kristin Beehler played close but Adams found herself behind once again. Facing a match point, Adams held off Beehler and won three points herself for the win.
Adams teamed with junior Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) in No. 1 doubles, where the pair recorded an 8-4 win. They opened the match with a 4-1 lead before losing the next three games, but recovered sweeping the next four.
The win improved Borza's overall career record to 113-46 which ties her for sixth on the all-time victories list.
Pitt travels to Marshall on Saturday, Feb. 16, for a noon matchup, prior to a neutral site meeting with Cincinnati on Sunday at 11 a.m.
