PITTSBURGH--Pitt's women's tennis team won its season-opener against Big East foe Georgetown, 6-1, at Club 4 Life this evening. The Panthers improve to 4-1 in their last five contests against the Hoyas.
The match opened with a 90-minute doubles match. Despite already clinching the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, Pitt's duo of junior Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and freshman Elizabeth Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson) battled back from a 3-2 deficit to give the Panthers a sweep.
Borza and Adams fell behind early, but gained momentum off a few key serves from Adams and great net play from Borza. After taking a 6-3 lead, Pitt found themselves up 7-4 with the game point in reach when Georgetown's No. 1 pair closed the gap and tied the contest at 7.
The Panthers would go on to win the tiebreaker and seal the doubles sweep, earning their first win of the spring together.
Later in singles play, Adams won another close one when she won the tiebreaker 7-4 during the first set. She garnered the victory when she gave up just one game in the second set.
Returning to the lineup after a season-ending injury last year, senior Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) won her match at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Pitt hosts Army at noon on Thursday, Feb. 14, at Oxford Athletic Club North in Wexford, Pa.
