PITTSBURGH-Despite the inclement weather, the Panthers opened the 2007-08 fall season on a successful note, as the team won three individual titles and advanced two doubles teams to finals at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, this past weekend.
Junior Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and freshman Elizabeth Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson) were both entered in the Singles Flight A bracket for the Panthers. Additionally, both swept their way to an all-Panther finals with Borza coming out on top 6-0, 6-2.
Borza didn't drop a set as she defeated Rebecca Poole (6-3 6-0) and Rachel McGowan (6-3 6-2) of Duquesne before facing Adams in the final. Adams was victorious over Johanna Bezjak of Duquesne (3-6 6-3 10-5) in the first round and defeated Amy Staloch of CMU (6-0 6-3) to advance to the championship match.
The Panthers success wasn't limited to the first singles flight. Freshman Stephanie Scheinoff won the Singles Flight B tournament and sophomore Anna Broverman (Ashbury, W.Va./George Washington) won Flight D.
Scheinoff, competing for the first time as a Panther, defeated Ashley Herrick of CMU (6-3 6-1) to capture the title. Broverman persevered a first set loss against Alexandria Albano of Duquense in the fourth singles final, and succeeded to win in three sets, 1-6, 6-2 and 10-4.
The Panthers also advanced two of three teams in the first round of doubles action before play was stopped due to inclement weather.
Pitt heads to West Point, N.Y. for the three-day Women's Eastern Collegiate Invitational on Friday, Sept. 14.
