Women's Tennis Win Doubles Title In Hampton

HAMPTON, Va.--Pitt wins a doubles title and advances one to a championship match in singles, as the University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team competed in the Hampton Roads Invitational at Old Dominion this past weekend.
Sophomores Anna Broverman (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and Shannon Benic (Fox Chapel, Pa./Oakland Catholic) would team in Flight D doubles and win in the finals with an 8-5 victory over the team of Frazier and Bergman. Prior to that match, the duo won with scores of 8-4 and 8-6 in the semis and quarterfinals, respectively.
Individually, Benic dropped her opening match, but went on to a 3-0 record in Flight D consolation games. Benic recorded two shutouts in consolation play, including her third match where she posted a victory over Marian Blancada in the consolation semifinals, before winning the finals with an 8-6 victory over Kristen Mueller.
On the other hand, Broverman won her first match in Flight D singles but later slipped in a 7-5, 0-1 (9) match to Lauren Cassie in the round of 16.
Advancing to the finals of Flight B singles, freshman Elizabeth Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson) won three matches in route to her championship bout. Adams toughest match was over Lauren Clifton in the quarterfinals, where she won the first set, 6-3, but dropped the second one, 2-6. She then returned in the tiebreaker with a 1-0(5) to face Tanya Ahuja in the semifinals.
Adams then advanced to the finals, where she was shutout in two sets.
Junior Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) went 2-1 in the in Flight A of the invitational. She won matches over Pascaline Cette (6-0, 7-5) and Carla Erskin (6-1, 6-1) to advance to the quarterfinals. In that final match she fell 3-6, 4-6 to Dina Senkina.
Adams and Borza would later combine in a hard-fought 9-8(6) loss in Flight A doubles.
Sophomore Sabrina Visram (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) went 3-1 finishing on top in the Flight A singles consolation match. After taking a shutout fall in the first match of the tournament, Visram won three consecutives matches in a pro style set, including a 9-7 victory over Rebecca Erickson.
Later Visram would team with junior Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) and win their round of 16 doubles match, as the duo turned in an 8-1 win over the team of Hirsh and Jha. The team would later slip 9-8(5) in the quarterfinals.
In singles competition, D'Achille was 2-1 in Flight B of the invitational and advanced to the quarterfinals. In the round of 16, D'Achille won a comeback in the tiebreaker after she lost the first set 2-6 and went on to pick up a 6-3 second set and a 1-0 (8).
After winning the first set of Flight C singles, freshman Stephanie Scheinoff dropped a semifinal match against Kayla Schwenk, posting a 2-1 record on the weekend. Scheinoff dropped the second set 7-5 and the tie breaker 1-0 (5). In her first match of the tournament, she defeated Courtney Goimarac in two, two-point sets.
In Flight C singles, junior Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) slipped in her opening match against Liza Bensimon, but rebounded with three consecutive wins in the consolation bracket. Smith gave up no more than four points in each consolation game.
Scheinoff and Smith also advanced to the semifinals of Flight C doubles after an 8-4 win in the quarterfinals.
Pitt travels back to Hampton, Va. this weekend, as they compete in the Women's ITA Championships.
