Women's Tennis Fall To Syracuse

TAMPA, Fla.--Under the intense afternoon heat in Florida, the University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Syracuse at the USF Tennis Courts, this afternoon, in their first Big East Tournament since the 1999-2000 season.

Due to an injury timeout in No. 2 singles action, the match was called after Syracuse won its third point and freshmen Kristy Borza (Beaver , Pa./Beaver Area) and Christie D'achille's (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) matches were ended, as well.

Sophomore Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) had just won her second point in the second set and was mounting a comeback, when her opponent fell and took an injury timeout. Syracuse's Catherine Zawadzki looked worn and probably wasn't going to return to the match.

During that timeout, Syracuse won its third singles point in the No. 5 spot, which ended the match. Borza was just one point away from putting her opponent away, while D'Achille was two points away from a win.

Earlier, the Panthers dropped the doubles point, but refused to go down without a fight, coming back in two of three matches.

The duo of senior Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) and sophomore Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned the lone win for Pitt. With the win Hughes improves her career record to 95-93, five short of the 100-Victory Club.

Playing in the No.1 spot, Borza and Friedman went down 1-5 in the match but battled back to 4-6, before falling 4-8.

On the No. 3 court, junior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and senior Becky Emmers (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) also trailed early, 2-5, but pushed forward before falling 5-8.

The Panthers move to the consolation bracket and face Seton Hall at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
