PITTSBURGH-The Panthers were outlasted by the Red Storm in game one of Pitt's Big East opener at Trees Field, this afternoon. The Panthers fell 9-4 to St. John's after a seven run comeback in the sixth.
Pitt got on the board early in the first inning as senior Lisa McGregor (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford Senior) trickled the ball to left field to send classmate Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) home.
Later in the second, the Panthers rallied three more runs off two hits and three St. John's errors. Sophomore Rebecca Stottlemyer (Charleloi, Pa./Home School) scored her third run of the season due to one of the Red Storm errors while making a play on DiMaria's ball. With a bouncy hit to left field, sophomore Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) garnered two RBI, allowing DiMaria and sophomore Valerie Mihalik (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) to score on the play. Pitt led 4-1 following the second inning.
St. John's, then, used a seven-run sixth inning to push ahead in the ball game. The inning included two homers with runners on, four hits and one Pitt error. The Red Storm's first run of the game was scored when Lauren Lupinetti recorded her sixth homer of the season in the second inning. Lupinetti later recorded another RBI with a single up the middle in the third.
Pitching the loss for the Panthers was junior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine). Bostick (6-7) allowed seven hits and struck out five batters, while working 5.1 innings. Senior Christa Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Harim Johnson West) pitched the final five outs holding St. John's two hits and one earned run.
