PITTSBURGH-Early inning runs lead the University of Pittsburgh softball team to a sweep over the Buffalo Bulls and a 7-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader at Trees Field, this afternoon. Pitt improves to 19-12 on the season.
Pitt scored early in the ball game with three runs in the first inning and four in the second.
Junior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) scored the Panthers first run off a single center field from senior Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour). DiMaria, then, scored when sophomore Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) found the same hole in center field. Dignon crossed home plate when the catcher tried to throw her out at third.
Sophomore Valerie Mihalik (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) hit a lead-off triple to start the second inning for the Panthers. Mihalik was finally sent home after DiMaria hit a two-out single to center field. Junior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) garnered two RBI when she trickled a hard up the middle, after Dignon drove DiMaria in. Pitt led 7-0 after two innings of play.
Buffalo ended the shutout in the fifth with a run off three hits. The Bulls tried once again to comeback in the seventh inning but fell short when the Panthers held them to one run off two hits.
Freshman Kaitlyn Schuster (Elwood City, Pa./Elwood) was pitching in her first home game as a Panther, allowing eight hits in the game.
Pitt hits the road for two conference match-ups this weekend. The Panthers first face Rutgers on Saturday, before heading to Villanova on Sunday. Both doubleheaders have noon starts.
