PITTSBURGH – Abena Atuobi of women’s track & field and Cole Matthews of wrestling were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Atuobi, a senior, opened up her final outdoor campaign with a strong showing in a pair of throwing events Saturday at the Stan Romanoski Open in West Virginia. She started her day with a victory in the shot put as she posted a distance of 47’9.25” (14.56m), more than nine feet better than the second place finisher. She was then able to post a second-place finish in the discus throw with a new personal record distance of 148’1.00” (45.13m) which marked the fifth best throw in program history in the event.
Matthews led the way for the Pitt wrestling team at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships, earning his first All-America honor and securing fifth place at 141 pounds. Matthews, a native of Greenville, Pa., became Pitt’s 83rd All-American in wrestling after outperforming his No. 6 seed in his weight class. With four wins at NCAAs in Detroit, Matthews finished an outstanding junior season with a 21-4 record. Matthews’ run at nationals included impressive victories over the No. 3 seed Sebastian Rivera of Rutgers and No. 4 seed Real Woods of Stanford. His efforts helped Pitt score 20.5 team points to finish 24th overall at the NCAA Championships, securing another top-25 finish in wrestling for head coach Keith Gavin and the Panthers.
