PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Alexis Solak, Desmond Palmer and Caleb Parry were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Solak, a sophomore, has been on fire at the plate recently for the Pitt softball team. After hitting .500 last weekend at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, she produced a .588 hitting percentage this weekend going 10-for-17 with a home run, five RBIs and four runs scored. In the Panthers’ first game against Southeastern, Solak went 3-for-4 with a solo home run. She also scored every time she reached base in the game. She was also perfect in Pitt’s extra-innings loss to Troy, producing four hits in four at-bats including a single that scored two runs in the opening inning. She rounded out the weekend with a last hit against Southeastern in Pitt’s perfect game which put up two insurance runs in the final inning of play. On the weekend Solak recorded a .588 on base percentage and an .824 slugging percentage. She now leads Pitt on the season with a .514 average, 18 hits and 14 RBI.
Palmer picked up All-ACC accolades in three events for Pitt at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Notre Dame, Ind., Saturday. The senior claimed bronze medals and All-ACC first team honors in in the 60m hurdles (8.00) as well as the 4x400m relay (3:10.90) alongside Ken Brosier, Jamaree Murray and Joshua McDonald. Palmer took fifth in the 400m race (46.96) to earn second team honors.
Parry, a redshirt junior, helped lead an offensive charge that scored 25 runs in Pitt baseball’s three-game series with Siena at Historic Dodgertown. Parry hit a .500 clip in three starts, boasting a .769 slugging percentage and .500 on base percentage. He had his biggest game of the weekend in Pitt’s 11-5 win in the series finale (game two of a DH), going 3-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs, including a double and a HR.
Up next, Pitt softball will begin ACC play by taking on North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., Friday through Sunday.
Track and field will begin outdoor season by traveling to Atlanta for the Yellow Jacket Invitational Friday and Saturday, March 17-18.
The Pitt baseball team will spend this weekend in Spartanburg, S.C., where they will meet Wofford Friday, USC Upstate Saturday, and Wright State Sunday.
