PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh track and field student-athletes Desiree Garland and Nick Wolk were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Garland, a Duquesne, Pa., native, anchored Pitt’s 4x400m relay team that broke a six-year-old school record with a time of 3:35.73 at the Meyo Invitational Saturday at Loftus Sports Center. The time leads the ACC and is ranked 13th in the nation. The senior posted two more season-best times with top-five finishes in the 200m (24.52) and the 400m (53.89). Her 400m time clocks in at No. 2 on the ACC performance list and is No. 29 in the nation.
At the same meet, Wolk broke a 27-year-old school record in the men’s 3000m with a time of 8:07.09. The sophomore’s time bested Keith Dowling’s mark of 8:09.52 set in 1991. The 3000m time ranks fourth on the ACC men’s performance list and 55th in the nation.
Pitt track and field will compete Saturday at the Kent State Qualifier in Kent, Ohio, as well as the SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.
