Merrill, who earned two degrees with honors from Virginia Tech in chemistry and biochemistry, is equally talented on the court as she earned the No. 1 singles and doubles spots as a player for the Hokies from 2008-12. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh[apos]s Swanson School of Engineering.
At Pitt, Merrill also serves on the Graduate and Professional Student Government as the Vice President of Programming and is extremely active in the community.
While at Virginia Tech, Merrill was recognized by numerous organizations for her outstanding academics including honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA. She was awarded the NCAA[apos]s Postgraduate Scholarship in 2012, the ACC Postgraduate Scholarship in 2012 and was a Rhodes Scholarship Finalist in District 4 in 2011. Additionally, she was an All-ACC Academic Women[apos]s Tennis Team honoree all four years.
Merrill is a native of Reading, Pa.
