Katherine Castro is entering her first year in the coaching ranks as a volunteer assistant coach with the Pitt women’s tennis team following a two year career as a Panther.
As a senior this past season, Castro was a member of the number one and two doubles spots and registered eight singles wins and nine doubles wins, including a win over No. 14 ranked Notre Dame with partner Lolade Ogungbesan.
In 2013-14, Castro was again a key member of the doubles teams as she registered seven doubles victories and five singles victories.
That year was the first of her career at Pitt after she sat out the 2012-13 season after transferring from Miami, Ohio. While there as a freshman, she recorded five singles victories and four doubles victories as a key newcomer.
Castro hails from Pinecrest, Fla., and attended Miami Palmetto Senior High, where she was the number one doubles player for four years, number one singles for three, was a state runner-up as a sophomore, was inducted into the Miami-Palmetto Senior High Sports Hall of Fame and was the Miami Herald Athlete of the Year in 2010-11.
