BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Pitt Panthers (23-13, 6-10 ACC) showed fight in the latter innings on Friday night but fell in their series opener with Virginia Tech (18-18, 8-11 ACC), 11-6.
Pitt's offense loaded the bases and scored a handful of runs in the top of the ninth inning but came up short in game one.
Caden Dulin extended his hitting streak to sixteen games with his solo home run in the sixth inning and finished the day 2-for-5. Trey Fenderson went 2-for-5 with an RBI triple on Friday night. The triple was his first as a Panther. Third baseman Kai Wagner drove in a run and went 1-for-4 with a run scored. The ACC's leader in walks, Lorenzo Carrier, added two more to his ledger and scored a run. Carrier has worked 42 walks so far this season.
Pitt's 76 home runs this year leave them four shy of breaking the program record for home runs in a single season.
Daniel McAuliff kept the Hokie offense at bay in the middle frames with 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. McAuliff struck out six batters in what was his best outing of the season.
Virginia Tech scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning and led 2-0 through the first three innings.
With one out in the top of the fourth, Kai Wagner laced a single to right field on the eleventh pitch of the at-bat to get Pitt's offense started. He moved up to third on Trey Fenderson's single to right and scored on a Joey Baran RBI groundout to cut the Virginia Tech lead in half.
The Hokies plated nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to take an 11-1 lead after four.
Caden Dulin slugged his eighth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning on a solo shot to dead center.
Pitt added a run in the top of the eighth inning on Trey Fenderson's RBI triple into the right-center gap. Lorenzo Carrier led off the inning with his second walk and game and scored on Fenderson's first three-bagger of the season.
The Panthers did not go down without a fight in the top of the ninth inning, loading the bases and scoring three runs.
Carter Dierdorf led off the inning with a double and came home on Derrick Tarpley Jr.'s single to right. With the bases loaded, Kai Wagner worked a walk and Joey Baran was hit by a pitch to plate Pitt's fifth and sixth runs of the night. Pitt would leave the bases loaded as Virginia Tech claimed the series opener, 11-6, on Friday night.
First pitch for game two will be tomorrow evening at 6 PM.
