BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Pitt Panthers (24-13, 7-10 ACC) scored four runs in the final two innings to even their series with the Virginia Tech Hokies (18-19, 8-12 ACC) on Saturday night.
It's the fifth time since conference play started that the Panthers have won a game when they were trailing or tied in the ninth inning. Three of those wins have been on the road against ACC teams.
Pitt plated three runs in the eighth inning to tie the game and scored one run in the top of the ninth to even the series and set up a rubber match on Sunday afternoon.
Trey Fenderson had his second multiple-hit game of the weekend on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Fenderson logged two hits in game one last night. Caden Dulin extended his hitting streak to seventeen games with another two-hit day. He's recorded multiple hits in 10 of the 17 games. Joey Baran went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and brought in the winning run on a bases loaded walk in the ninth inning.
The Panthers pitched by committee on Saturday. They used eight arms in the win, six of which did not allow an earned run. Sam Bryan gave the Panthers a great start, striking out two and retiring all four batters he faced. Chase Kriebel also got four outs for Pitt and did not surrender a run. Eddie Smink tossed two scoreless innings to close it out and earn his third win of the season.
Back-to-back singles from Trey Fenderson and Joey Baran put runners on the corners in the top of the second inning for the Panthers. Sebastian Pisacreta drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right and gave Pitt a 1-0 lead.
Virginia Tech drove in a run on a sacrifice fly of their own to knot the game at one after four innings.
The Hokies took advantage of a Panther error to take their first lead of the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. They added two more runs in the next inning and Pitt trailed 4-1 through six.
The Panthers scored three runs on four hits in the top of the eighth inning to tie to game at four. A Lorenzo Carrier walk, with singles from Kai Wagner and Trey Fenderson, led off the inning and loaded the bases for the Panthers. Joey Baran drove in Carrier on an RBI fielder's choice to third to bring Pitt within two. With two outs, Carter Dierdorf lined a two-run single to right center and knotted Saturday's game at four.
Eddie Smink entered in the bottom half of the inning and escaped a jam to keep the game at four runs apiece.
After Caden Dulin singled and Lorenzo Carrier was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the ninth, Anthony LaSala moved both runners into scoring position with a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back walks gave the Panthers the lead as Joey Baran worked a bases-loaded base on balls. Pitt led 5-4 going into the final frame.
Eddie Smink stayed in for the bottom of the ninth and shut the door to even the series on Saturday night.
Pitt looks to clinch their third road ACC series of the season tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM.
