Pitt Unable to Slow Virginia in Road Loss

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Pitt women's basketball team dropped an 84-46 decision to Virginia on Thursday night inside of John Paul Jones Arena.
Virginia set the tone early and never trailed, building a 20-10 advantage after the opening quarter and extending the lead to 38-22 at halftime. The Cavaliers continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring Pitt 24-14 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Theresa Hagans Jr. led the Panthers with 13 points, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line with five assists. Fatima Diakhate finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, recording her 10th double-figure scoring performance of the season. Carla Viegas chipped in seven points and Lauren Rust pulled in seven rebounds. Pitt struggled offensively on the night, shooting 28.8 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from three-point range. Virginia capitalized on turnovers and controlled the paint, scoring 50 points inside and converting 24 points off Pitt miscues.
UP NEXT
Pitt will face No. 21 Duke at home on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Sunday but has been moved up due to pending inclement weather.
