PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team dropped the opening game of the series to Louisville, 8-3, Thursday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.

Kyra Pittman started in the circle and held the Cardinals scoreless through the first two innings. Pittman allowed two base runners in the first before the inning ended on a Camryn Murphy diving catch on a line drive the right field.

Kaitlyn Brannstrom finished the day going 2-for-3, got the first hit for the Panthers with a leadoff single up the middle and later scored the first run of the game off an Ana Hernandez double the hit high off the center field banners and bounced into play to give Pitt a 1-0 edge.

The Cardinals used four hits and took advantage of two Pitt fielding errors to score three runs in the top of the third inning and take a 3-1 lead. Louisville posted another three-run inning in the top of the fifth to take a five-run lead. Char Lorenz hit a two-run homer to left field and Camryn Lookadoo added another run with an RBI double off the left field wall.

The Cardinals secured the victory with back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh to make the final score 8-1.

Alyssa Zabala silenced the Pitt batters, holding the Panthers scoreless through four frames before giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Tieley Vaughn two-run single.
