SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Pitt and Notre Dame each started with strong offensive performances as both teams went back and forth in scoring during the opening two innings. The Panthers couldn't overcome the strong relief outing in the circle by Brianne Weiss and dropped the second game of the series to Notre Dame, 12-4, in six innings Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers and the Fighting Irish combined to score 10 runs on nine hits over the first two frames, as Notre Dame held a 6-4 edge heading into the third inning. Notre Dame made a pitching change and put Weiss in the circle to start the third inning as the freshman pitcher went on to hold the Panthers to just one hit over the final four frames.
The Panthers picked up right where they left off Friday, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning off a two-run homer from Camryn Murphy. Tieley Vaughn drew a two-out walk to get on base and Murphy attacked the first pitch of the at bat and hit her fourth homer of the season to give Pitt an early 2-0 lead.
The Fighting Irish loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and walked in a run to cut the deficit 2-1 with no outs in the bottom of the first. Notre Dame tied the game and took a 4-2 lead with back-to-back singles from Rachel Allen and Anna Holloway in the bottom of the first.
Pitt answered by loading the bases with two outs in the top of the second inning as Vaughn hit a single that bounced over the pitcher's head to make it 4-3. Pitt then tied the game on a bases loaded walk after a pitch clock violation on Micaela Kastor awarded Murphy the fourth ball of the at-bat and took first base to score another run for the Panthers.
Notre Dame took the lead by scoring at least one run in each of the next four frames. Holloway took back the lead, 6-4, for Notre Dame with a two-RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the second. Christina Willemssen extended the lead to 7-4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the third and Jane Kronenberger extended the lead to 8-4 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.
Notre Dame added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 11-4 lead and scored one run in the bottom of the sixth with one out to record the 12-4 run-rule victory.
Weiss earned the win after allowing just one hit and issued one walk, while striking out seven in 4.0 innings of work.
