Pittman, Hernandez Lead Pitt to Victory Over Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Pitt softball team bounced back with a 5-1 victory over Notre Dame in the series finale at Melissa Cook Stadium, Sunday afternoon. Kyra Pittman anchored the Panthers in the circle as Ana Hernandez had a strong offensive performance to lead the Panthers to victory.

Pittman tossed 5.0 shutout innings before giving up a run in the bottom of the sixth. The senior right-hander finished the day with one earned run on five hits with two walks and struck out four in her eighth complete game this season. Hernandez had a hand in four of the five runs scored, driving in three and scoring two. Hernandez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI, a double and a home run.

The Panthers took a 3-0 lead after the first inning as Hernandez hit a two-run double with two outs and Desirae Martinez followed with an RBI single.

Pittman and Kami Kamzik exchanged 1-2-3 innings in the second before Notre Dame loaded the bases in the bottom of the third. Pittman worked her way out of the jam and retired the next two batters to end the inning and keep the Fighting Irish scoreless through three innings.

The Panthers loaded the bases two different times in the top of the fourth. Martinez led off the inning with a single up the middle and Amanda Ramirez drew a walk before Alena Ball reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Pitt added another run as Martinez scored on a Kylie Griggs sacrifice fly to left field for a 4-0 lead.

Hernandez added another run for the Panthers with a solo home run to center field, her second homer of the season, taking a five-run lead in the top of the fifth inning. Notre Dame got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning after Kaia Cortes was awarded a double after the Pitt outfielders lost the ball in the sun and eventually scored on an Anna Holloway sacrifice fly.

The Panthers return to Pittsburgh with a midweek match up against Ohio State on Wednesday, April 9 (ACCNX – 6 p.m.) before hosting Duke in a three-game series April 11-13.
