Hot Start Propels Panthers to 66-52 Win Over Mount St. Mary's

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team bounced back on Saturday afternoon, defeating Mount St. Mary's by a score of 66-52 inside the Petersen Events Center.
The Panthers (1-1) were led by Fatima Diakhate, who delivered a commanding performance with 14 points and a career-high-tying 11 rebounds, for her second career double-double. Diakhate shot a blistering 70% on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Mikayla Johnson followed with 13 points on an efficient 6-for-10 shooting, marking her second straight game in double figures.
Lauren Rust made the most of her first start of the season, contributing eight points and a career-high nine rebounds, while playing a career-high 36 minutes in her fifth career start. Angel Jones also notched her second straight game in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds, giving Pitt three players in double figures.
How It Happened
Pitt came out firing, connecting on 12 of its first 14 shots to jump out to a commanding 25-8 lead after one quarter. Rust and Johnson each scored six points in the opening frame as the Panthers shot an impressive 85.7% from the field.
The offensive rhythm continued into the second quarter with Megan Hollingsworth completing a three-point play and Diakhate adding four more points to stretch the lead to 41-18 at halftime. The Panthers shot 73% in the opening half and dominated the paint with 28 points in the key.
Mount St. Mary's (0-2) found some rhythm after the break, hitting four triples in the third quarter to trim the deficit, but Diakhate and Jones combined for 12 second-half points to keep the Panthers comfortably ahead. Pitt's lead reached 27 midway through the third before closing out the victory.

•              Pitt shot 52.7% from the field (29-for-55) while holding Mount St. Mary's to just 26.2% (17-for-65).
•              The Panthers dominated inside, scoring 42 of their 66 points in the paint.
•              Pitt won the rebounding battle 45-31, led by Diakhate (11) and Rust (9).
•              Jayda Queeley's 8 assists marked a career high.
•              The Panthers tallied 19 assists on 29 made baskets.
•              Pitt remains undefeated against Mount St. Mary's, improving to 10-0 all-time in the series.
