PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team pulled out a 56-54 victory over Cornell on Tuesday night inside the Petersen Events Center.
Redshirt junior Fatima Diakhate led the Panthers with a standout performance, recording her second straight double-double with a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Diakhate went a perfect 9-for-9 from the field on the night. Nine consecutive field goals made is the most makes in a game by an ACC player without a miss since Virginia Tech's Rose Micheaux made nine straight against Wake Forest on Jan. 12, 2025.
Carla Viegas added her first double-digit scoring effort in a Pitt uniform, finishing with 15 points behind five three-pointers. The junior guard also contributed three rebounds and three assists, tying her career highs in both categories.
How It Happened
The teams traded baskets throughout the first half, with Diakhate pacing the Panthers with 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting. Four three-pointers kept the Big Red close, but Pitt took a four-point lead into halftime.
The Panthers began to pull away in the third quarter, sparked by six quick points from Diakhate and a triple from Viegas that gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game. However, back-to-back three-pointers from Cornell trimmed the margin to five entering the final quarter.
Cornell opened the final frame with a 9-0 run to grab the lead midway through the quarter. Viegas responded with a clutch three-pointer to pull Pitt within one, then hit another with a minute remaining to put the Panthers ahead. After Cornell briefly took a one-point lead, Diakhate made a layup in the paint with 20 seconds remaining to regain the lead. On the other end of the floor, Mikayla Johnson drew a charge with 8 seconds on the clock to seal the victory for the Panthers.
