Jones Hits 1,000 Point Milestone
PITTSBURGH - The Pitt women's basketball team bounced back with an 87-65 win over Le Moyne on Tuesday night at the Petersen Events Center.
Four Panthers scored in double figures, led by freshman Theresa Hagans Jr., who posted a career-high 17 points, eight assists and three steals in her first collegiate start.
Angel Jones added 12 points, eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone for her career with a pullup jumper in the first quarter.
Fatima Diakhate recorded her fourth straight double-digit scoring effort, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season.
Mikayla Johnson rounded out Pitt's top scorers with 13 points and seven rebounds, including four assists in the fourth quarter.
How It Happened
Pitt opened the game with a 22–14 advantage after one quarter behind eight points from Jones and four rebounds from freshman Macie Arzner.
Le Moyne knocked down two three-pointers early in the second to cut the deficit to six, but Carla Viegas responded with a triple out of the break to halt the Dolphins' momentum. Two free throws from Arzner — her first collegiate points — pushed the Panthers back to a double-digit lead. A late pair of Le Moyne threes trimmed the margin to six at halftime.
The Panthers broke the game open in the third with a 12–0 run sparked by back-to-back Jones jumpers, followed by five straight points from Megan Hollingsworth and another Viegas three, to extend the lead to 15.
Pitt closed strong in the fourth, outscoring Le Moyne 24–14 behind the trio of Lauren Rust, Diakhate and Johnson, who accounted for all 24 points in the period. Johnson's tough and-one finish underneath gave Pitt a 20 point lead, which grew to 24 after back-to-back Diakhate jumpers in the paint, securing the win as the Panthers move to 3-2 on the season.
