Pitt Falls to Scranton, 69-63

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team fell to Scranton by a score of 69–63 at the Petersen Events Center Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (2-2) had three reach double figures. Fatima Diakhate paced the Panthers with an efficient 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed 9 rebounds in 36 minutes of action. In her first start of the season, Carla Viegas knocked down 6-of-12 field-goal attempts, including 4-of-8 from long range for 16 points, including 10 in the third quarter. Angel Jones tallied 15 points, nine of which came in the second half, as well as three rebounds and three assists.
How It Happened
The Royals (3-0) came out hot, connecting on six of their first nine three-point attempts and took a 37–27 lead into the break. Pitt responded with a dominant third quarter, outscoring Scranton 23–7 to take a 50-44 lead into the final ten minutes of play, but couldn't sustain the momentum in the fourth, as Scranton pulled away late.
Game Notes
- Lauren Rust grabbed 13 boards, a new career high.
- Pitt won the rebounding battle 39-34, but lost the turnover battle as they gave it up twice as many times as Scranton, 18-9.
- The Panthers had the edge in points in the paint, 36-20.
- Viegas and Jones recorded season highs in points with 16 and 15, respectively as well as assists, with 3 each.
