LEWISBURG, PA. – The Pitt women's soccer team (2-1-1, 0-0-0 ACC) bounced back with a showstopping 5-1 road win against the Bucknell Bison (2-1-1, 0-0-0 PL), Sunday afternoon at Emmit Field.
Senior Sarah Schupansky celebrated her birthday in the best way – earning six total points this afternoon with two goals and two assists added to her career stats.
To get the afternoon started, Schupanksy sent the ball to the center of the box in an early free kick, but the Bison keeper made the stop. Just under two minutes later, senior Samiah Phiri launched the ball as a shot attempted, but a Bucknell defender got in front of it to make the block.
Transfer Abbigail Reisz made her first save as a Panther after a Bison made a run up the left side to cross the ball to the goal.
A pair of dangerous shots on goal were put up by Phiri and Ellie Coffield in the 17th minute, but the Bucknell keeper got her gloves on them.
Eager to score, Shupansky launched a ball from the right side but hit the post. Phiri found the rebound but couldn't complete the effort as a Bison defender got in front of her shot.
Pitt and Bucknell went into the locker room at the half, nil-nil. The Panthers held the majority of the possession in the first half with a 9-3 edge in shots, 3-1 shots on goal and 5-0 corner kick opportunities.
Coming out for the second half, both teams were hungry to get on the board first. The Bison earned their only goal of the afternoon in the 49th minute.
The Panthers capitalized on a corner kick as junior Katie Zailski posted the equalizer from a double assist from Coffield and Schupansky.
Pitt took the lead in the 63rd minute as Schupansky clocked her first of two goals this afternoon with another quick double assist from Phiri and freshman Lola Abraham. Just under two minutes later, Coffield posted a strike from outside the box to put Pitt up, 3-1. Senior Keera Melenhorst earned the assist.
The Panthers weren't done yet. Chloe Minas earned her first goal in her collegiate career from a double assist from Magali Gagne and Schupansky.
Senior Schupanksy earned her sixth point of the afternoon after sneaking in Pitt's fifth and final goal in the right corner of the net.
The Panthers didn't just take the lead in points this afternoon. Pitt held the edge in shots, 25-12, shots on goal, 13-6, and corner kick opportunities, 10-0.
