No. 7 Panthers Take Down the Dukes, 2-1

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 ACC) secured their first victory of the season against the Duquesne Dukes (1-1-0, 0-0-0 A10) Sunday afternoon at Highmark stadium in front of 1250 fans with a 2-1 takedown.
Pitt battled back and forth with the Dukes in the first 45 minutes. Senior Sarah Schupansky posted three shots with one on goal in the first half.
The Panthers went into the locker room holding the edge in total shots, 9-5, and shots on goal, 3-2, with a total possession of 66 percent.
Pitt was ready for more in the second half. Schupanksy put the Panthers on the board first in the 63rd minute with an assist by sophomore Sage Stelzer. The Panthers posted three more shots but couldn't find the right moment to score again.
In the 84th minute, sophomore Lucia Wells secured her first career goal after a clean pass from Chloe Minas who earned the assist, doubling the Panthers' lead.
Duquesne responded in the 87th minute, as Margey Brown tapped in a goal to score the Dukes' only goal.
Junior Ellie Breech posted three saves against the Dukes to keep the lead for Pitt.
The Panthers didn't just lead the afternoon in goals. Pitt had 22-11 shots, 11-4 shots on goal and 9-1 corner kicks.

The Panthers will officially open their 2024 home campaign on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field as they play host to Buffalo.
