PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team (9-2-1, 2-1-1 ACC) defeated Boston College (3-7-2, 0-4-0 ACC) at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Saturday night with a 2-0 shutout.
The Panthers started the night off with straight dominance of the field. Just in the fifth minute, Sarah Schupansky put Pitt on the board first, posting a goal in the bottom right corner of the net off of Deborah Abiodun's assist.
Pitt continued to create scoring opportunities throughout the first half with 11 shots on goal. The Panther's defense held up a strong force, only allowing the Eagles to place one shot on goal, but Ellie Breech was there for the save.
The Panthers went into the locker room on top with the 1-0 lead.
Coming back for the final 45, Pitt continued their momentum of control of the field. Landy Mertz remained a strong force on the right side, continuing to be unstoppable by any Eagle defender.
In the 57th minute, Amanda West fended off multiple Boston College defenders to find Ellie Coffield open behind her. Coffield then launched a beautiful shot in the top right corner of the net to secure the second goal for the Panthers.
The back line continued to defend the goal for Pitt for the remainder of the final 45, leaving the Eagles scoreless.
Pitt held an overall 62% of the possession tonight, not leaving room for the Eagles to have any opportunities. The Panthers also held the edge in shots (23-5), shots on goal (18-2), and corner kicks (8-3).
