No. 21 Pitt Women’s Soccer Defeats Kent State with a Shutout, 1-0

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team (3-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) took down Kent State (1-1-1, 0-0-0 MAC) in a 1-0 shutout Thursday evening at Zoeller Field. Freshman Lainie Fuchs headed her first collegiate goal in this evening's win for Pitt.
Tonight's winning goal came at the tenth minute when junior Sarah Schupansky launched a corner perfectly for Fuchs to find an opening in the back of the net. This evening's assist by Schupanksy brings her to a total of five points on the season.
Pitt dominated the remainder of the half to keep the Golden Flashes scoreless heading into the locker room.
After the break, Pitt continued strong pressure on the Golden Flashes, dominating the pitch in shots with 14-6 in the second half.
For the match, the Panthers dominated the pitch in a multitude of ways. Pitt held a strong 25-10 in shots, 11-3 shots on goal and 15-6 corners. Samiah Phiri was a catalyst for Pitt throughout the night, containing the ball across the field. Defender Ashton Gordon remained as Pitt's calming presence in the back, always there to reset the team. In goal, Ellie Breech stood strong, making three saves tonight while Sarah Melen finished with ten for the Golden Flashes.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will return home at Ambrose Urbanic Field to host the Bucknell Bisons on Sunday, Aug. 27 with a 1:00 p.m. first kick.
