PITTSBURGH, PA -- The Pitt Panthers (23-27, 10-15 ACC) beat the Penn State Nittany Lions (24-23, 6-14 BIG-10) 11-3 at PNC Park on Tuesday evening. This is Pitt's first ever win at PNC Park and their first win against in-state rival Penn State since April 10, 2019.
It was a home run party at PNC Park, as the Panthers launched three home runs tonight. Kyle Hess and Noah Martinez both hit three-run shots, and CJ Funk lined his team-leading 13th home run into the shrubs in center field. Six Panthers collected hits this evening, Kyle Hess and Noah Martinez each collected their team-leading 17th multiple-hit game, as Justin Acal collected his seventh multiple hit game.
The Panther's pitching staff showed up tonight, a total of six arms came out of the bullpen to contribute. Jonathan Bautista provided the strong start Pitt needed going three innings, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out four. Holden Phelps and Quinn Konuszewski threw quality middle relief innings as senior Brady Devereux made his 11th appearance and got out of a bases loaded jam. Freshman Ryan Reed came on in the ninth and got two quick outs. Coach Bell then brought in the Pittsburgh kid, Nash Bryan, to get the final out in a ballpark he came to a number of times growing up.
Kyle Hess continued his tear from this past week, adding two more hits and three more RBI. As he went 2-4 on the night, with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. He has 13 RBI in his last five games, hitting a home run in three of his last four.
Pitt starting pitcher Jonathan Bautista made quick work of the Nittany Lions in the top of the first, as he struck out the side to start this game.
Penn State takes first lead of the game in the bottom of the third, CJ Pittaro singled to center and would advance to second following a wild pitch. Because of that he was able to score on a T Bramley double that was pulled down the third base line, putting Penn State up 1-0.
Dom Popa and Jayden Melendez both worked walks in the bottom half of the third which brought up Noah Martinez with two outs. He lined a 1-2 pitch to dead center, just left of the shrubs that are in front of the batter's eye, for a three-run home run that put the Panthers up 3-1 after three innings.
Right fielder CJ Funk followed that up in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to dead center that actually landed in the shrubs, one-hopping it into the "T" in Pirates. He leads the team with 13 home runs this season.
The Panthers picked their offense back up in the bottom of the sixth inning, stringing together four hits and a walk before an out was recorded, as Noah Martinez led off the inning with a single to left field. Jack Anderson lined a ball to the left fielder who misplayed it and let it bounce passed him, scoring Martinez all the way from first. With Anderson now on second, Kyle Hess lined a double off the base of the Clemente Wall in right, however Anderson would only advance to third. CJ Funk would walk and load the bases with nobody out. Justin Acal lined the third ball to left field that inning for two-run single, putting the Panthers up 7-2. After a Dom Popa ground out, Anthony LaSala bounced a ball in between the pitcher's mound and first base where the pitcher booted it allowing LaSala to reach and Funk to score from third.
It is an understatement to say Kyle Hess is seeing the ball well right now, he added a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh which put the Panthers up 11-2.
Penn State added their last run of the game in the top of the eighth, making it 11-3. And that is how this one would end.
The Panthers travel down to Durham to face NC State in a pivotal series with a trip to the ACC Tournament on the line. The series will start on Thursday and end on Saturday, giving teams an extra day or two of rest before the ACC Tournament starts up next Tuesday.
