Panthers Drop Doubleheader to North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Pitt dropped two games to North Carolina by the scores of 10-6 and 3-0, in an Easter Sunday doubleheader at the Anderson Softball Stadium. The Panthers fell to 17-17 on the season and 2-9 in conference play.

The Panthers bats were hot in the first game of the doubleheader as four of the Pitt's runs were scored off of three home runs and six of their eight hits went for extra bases.

Senior Kayla Lane tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run to left field, her third homer of the season. The Tar Heels put up a big third inning, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 7-1 lead.

Pitt outscored North Carolina 5-3 over the final three innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from Yvonne Whaley in the fifth and a pinch-hit solo homer from Kylie Griggs in the sixth. Pitt scored two more runs in the top of the seventh off back-to-back doubles from Bailey Drapola and Whaley and an RBI single from Sarah Seamans.

Redshirt-sophomore Dani Drogemuller started in the circle and retired the side to open the second game of the doubleheader. Drogemuller suffered the loss despite striking out nine batters in 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks.

The Panthers were limited to just three hits through seven innings with no runs scored and two errors.

NOTES

Kylie Griggs hit her first pinch-hit home run and is the second Panther to hit a pinch-hit homer this season. Abby Edwards hit a solo pinch-hit home run against Sam Houston on Feb. 25, 2023.
Kat Rodriguez extended her on-base streak to 11 games and her hitting streak to six games.
Sarah Seamans also extended her hitting streak and on-base streak each to seven games.

The Panthers travel to Loretto, Pa. on Tuesday, April 11, for a midweek match up with Saint Francis. Pitt returns to Vartabedian Field to host Georgia Tech in a three-game series April 14-16.
