Pitt Will Play a Doubleheader Saturday Due to Inclement Weather Sunday
PITTSBURGH – Sophomore Haylie Brunson matched a career-high by going 3-for-3 at the plate but the Panthers could not find a late offensive spark and ultimately dropped to the eighth-ranked Duke Blue Devils, 4-3, late Friday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.
The Panthers scored two of their runs off solo home runs from Brunson and senior Bailey Drapola. Brunson got the Panthers on the board with her solo shot to left center field in the bottom of the second. The Blue Devils answered with a solo homer of their own to even the score at 1-1 in the top of the third.
Duke took a one-run lead in the fifth inning and added two more runs off a D'Auna Jennings double to left field. Drapola led off the inning with her solo home run to cut the deficit while Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez got the Panthers within one-run with a single through the left side to make the score 4-3.
Cassidy Curd (13-1) pitched 5.0 innings to start the game before Jala Wright took the circle in the sixth. Curd came back in the circle to close out the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh and retired two of the final three batters en route to earning the win.
