
Panthers Drop Doubleheader in Series Finale to No. 8 Duke

PITTSBURGH – Pitt fell in a doubleheader during the series finale to the eighth-ranked Duke Blue Devils by the scores of 12-3 and 12-4, Saturday at Vartabedian Field.
Graduate student Yvonne Whaley recorded her 19th multi-hit game of the season while her and sophomore Haylie Brunson each picked up four hits over the two games. Whaley combined to go 4-for-8 at the plate while Brunson went 4-for-7 with a home run.
Pitt 3, Duke 12
Brunson had another successful outing, going 3-for-3 for the second consecutive game against the Blue Devils pitching staff. Whaley and Sarah Seamans both picked up multi-hit efforts by each going 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Blue Devils put up six runs over the first two innings before Cami Compson got the Panthers on the board with a single in the bottom of the second. Pitt cut the deficit in half by scoring three runs in the second.
Abby Edwards entered the circle with two outs in the second and gave up one run before holding the Blue Devils scoreless for three frames. Duke scored five more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the series win.
Pitt 4, Duke 12
Redshirt-sophomore Dani Drogemuller was a force in the circle to start the second game of the doubleheader. Drogemuller picked up six strikeouts over the first three innings, including striking out three batters in the first inning.
Seamans got the Panthers on the board early with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Blue Devils answered in the top of the second with a two-run homer of their own from Deja Davis.
Duke put up another five-run inning in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead and added three more runs over the next two innings to extend their lead 10-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Brunson and Bailey Drapola led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back home runs to keep the Panthers alive in the second game of the day, but the Blue Devils scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to secure another conference victory to end out their regular season.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will host four home games in their final week of the regular season. Pitt will face off against Robert Morris on Tuesday, May 2, at 6 p.m. before hosting NC State for Senior Weekend, May 5-7.
